Barcelona by Day
All roads lead to La Rambla Barcelona's fascinating, world-famous boulevard that cuts the Old Town in half on its way to the Port. The Rambla has it all: shops, restaurants, peep shows, bars, mime artists, buskers, and, of course pick-pockets! Nearby check out medieval Barcelona including the Cathedral, atmospheric squares and alleyways.
The Sagrada Familia Cathedral (starting to look almost half-built, after only a 100 years or so) is the world-recognised symbol of Barcelona. It has to be seen to be believed, and fans of its surrealist style may want to check out the other bulidings designed by its architect Gaudi in the Eixample district and Parc Güell.
Barcelona's beaches can be reached easily by metro or on foot. Here you can sunbathe, have a dip in the Med, or just soak up the scenery from the bar/restaurant located on the promenade looking over the sand. Near the beach is the Port Olympic, a fashionable marina lined with bars, restaurants, and night clubs.
For amazing panoramic views of Barcelona that can be enjoyed with a beer from a café terraza, head for Montjuic hill, near the 1992 Olympic Games Stadium. Take the Metro to Paral.lel, then the Funicular train, and finally the Telefèric de Montjuïc (cable car) to the top.
